FROM THE ARCHIVES — Durango’s first Valkyrie
Valkyrie came to Durango on September 16, 2023. In the Full Relay, MTC won in 9:25:46, under six minutes ahead of Mercy Ortho All-Stars (9:31:32), with The Shawmen of Solar third in 10:47:37. ItsWednesday finished first among all-female teams, eighth overall, in 12:04:28. In the Sprint Relay, Outstretched Arm won in 6:44:47, with Devo Besties second overall and first among women’s teams in 7:07:53, and Win or Booze third in 7:38:09. All results are from official timing; The Durango Herald’s contemporaneous report matches the record.

The third Durango Valkyrie ran on September 13, 2025. Titans of Terrain recorded a 7:28:22 finish in 2025, the fastest verified winning Full Relay time among the available 2022–2025 official results. Course distances and formats varied by year, so the times are not directly comparable as course records. The SHAWMEN finished second in 7:47:24 and Not Fired Yet third in 7:57:39; for context, the winning Full Relay times were 9:25:46 in 2023 and 8:28:38 in 2024. In the Sprint Relay, Valhalla or Bust won in 5:47:42, ahead of lambertz (6:26:08) and MSing with the Best (6:34:12).

The Valkyrie Relay was born on Utah’s Wasatch Back. A first race was planned for August 22, 2020, in Heber City, and was publicly cancelled ten days beforehand as COVID-19 conditions in Utah worsened. The first completed Valkyrie Relay was held on June 19, 2021, officially timed, on a course through Soldier Hollow, Heber Valley, the Jordanelle and Deer Creek reservoirs, and the surrounding Central Wasatch.

The first Valkyrie Relay was run on June 19, 2021, on Utah’s Wasatch Back. In the Full Relay, Team We Like Bacon finished first, ahead of Team SCHLUCKSPECHTERS in second and Team The fUTEgatives in third. From 2021 to 2022, the Valkyrie Relay ran on Utah’s Wasatch Back. The original course ran through Soldier Hollow, Heber Valley, the Jordanelle and Deer Creek reservoirs, and the surrounding Central Wasatch. The series later moved to Durango, Colorado.
