Seven disciplines, one team
Valkyrie is a relay. One team covers a single continuous course broken into seven legs, and every leg is a different sport. This page explains how the race works. Final 2027 course details are being verified.
How the race works
A team races together against one clock. Each leg is run by a teammate in that discipline, and the team’s timing hand-off passes from one athlete to the next at an exchange. The clock never stops — it runs from the first athlete’s start to the last athlete’s finish. How rosters above seven are used — including shared legs, support roles and alternates — will be defined in the Race Bible before registration opens.

Every Valkyrie course covers the same seven sports. Both the Full and the Sprint course use all seven — the Sprint runs a shorter version of each leg.

The order above is the leg order as it has been run previously. Whether the road cycle, stand-up paddle and open water swim legs run strictly in sequence or partly at the same time is one of the details being confirmed for 2027, and it may change how teams plan their roster.
Full and Sprint
Durango is run in two formats on the same day, over the same seven disciplines.
Full Course
The complete distance across all seven legs — the full Valkyrie course.
Sprint Course
The same seven disciplines over shorter legs. Built for teams newer to multisport relay racing, or with less range across the seven sports.
Leg distances for both formats are provisional and are not published here until the 2027 course is measured and confirmed.
Teams, exchanges and support
The hand-off
A leg ends when the athlete reaches the exchange and passes the team’s timing hand-off to the next teammate. Exchange locations for 2027 are being confirmed.
Bivouac
The Bivouac is the central basecamp for the race — one physical place where the race is run from.
Wingmates
Wingmates are registered non-racing support crew. They move athletes and gear between legs.
